The Parish Council meeting began, as usual, with the Chairman’s report on the previous meeting’s minutes. In brief, this comprised:-
The meeting was then closed to enable a resident to speak to the Council about the cross-roads at Reading Road/Park Lane where there was recently a fatal accident. The Council agreed that, not only was the crossroads dangerous, but that it looked very untidy due to debris from previous accidents being left around. The resident was assured that the Parish Council would continue to press for improvements at the site, and she was asked to encourage other residents to write to the Highways Department at Wokingham Borough. Cllr. Pam Hughes reported that J&J Coles, who have for many years provided a Thursday shopping bus to Wokingham for the elderly of Finchampstead, have now ceased to operate. The service was sponsored by the Parish Council and was much appreciated by residents. However, all is not lost. Quick thinking by Cllr. Hughes ensured that the trips will continue, operated by Keep Mobile who will provide a door-to-door service! However, they will need to know in advance who will be travelling, so customers must telephone 0118 979 3778 on the Wednesday. Many thanks to Cllr. Hughes, and to J&J Coles for the excellent service they have provided over the years. Cllr. Ian Milne, Chairman of the Roads Committee, reported that lights have now been installed in Avery’s Corner car park, and that a pedestrian crossing with traffic lights is in place near the Ratepayers’ Hall. The Council also noted the new reduced speed limit signs on Fleet Hill and Jubilee Hill, and expressed its thanks to Cllr. Milne for his tenacity in this matter. On the subject of Waste Management, the Council was informed that more households now have garden waste boxes, and that fewer cars are being abandoned. Apparently, the price of scrap metal has risen! Councillors were concerned, however, at the rubbish left alongside the skip in Avery’s Corner car park. The Amenities Committee will discuss the matter and come up with recommendations. And, finally, the 1994 Finchampstead video is now available for hire at the library – happy viewing!
