[Under Construction]

The meeting on 20th March began with a discussion on “The Code Uncovered”, a DVD concerning financial, personal and prejudicial interests, which was required reading for all councillors.  Whilst the DVD was aimed at District and Borough councils, it contained thought provoking material which was also of interest to Parish Councillors.

Cllr. Mrs. Newcombe, Chairman of Planning, was pleased to report that the Borough Council had, at last, given planning permission for work at The Greyhound pub.  We eagerly await the transformation!

Cllr. Markham reported on a meeting of the Amenities Committee which had been attended by Chris Buggy from the WBC Countryside Service.  Chris discussed future plans for California Park, which include the improvement of the footpath network, a multi-purpose building and increased use of the lake – maybe boating!  All is dependent upon a Lottery grant.

The Litter Warden, Roger Long, collected 46 bin-liners of rubbish from our roadsides during February.  The amount of litter seems to be on the increase, which is rather depressing, and it was suggested that we launch an anti-littering campaign, maybe starting with the schools.

On a more positive note, the flower baskets will go up at the crossroads and will be watered.  All we need is some sun!

Reports from FABNAG (Formerly the Police Liaison Group) (Cllr. Pearce) and the Gorse Ride Multi-agency meetings both reflected the frustration felt by residents of the Gorse Ride estate at the lack of action by WBC on practical issues.

Thanks to the hard work of Cllr. Ian Milne, the speed limit on a further stretch of Sandhurst Road has at last been reduced to 40mph.  This has been a long running issue, supported by residents, and sadly does not yet cover the whole length of the road.

The Parish Council had received a grant application for £15,000 from St James Church for help with the conservation work which is expected to cost approximately £500,000.  This was discussed at length by the Council.  There was prolonged and vigorous debate and the application was approved on a majority vote.

And, finally, it’s Parish Council election time!  If you have some time to spare and enjoy being part of your local community, it’s not too late to apply to be a Parish Councillor.  Contact  WBC Electoral Services.  Applications have to be in by 4th April.

Cllr Chris Driver
