The October meeting of Finchampstead Parish Council began with a visit from Sgt. Mike Cull, from Wokingham Police, who reported on various issues concerning our Parish. There has been an increase in car theft in the area, and Sgt. Cull warned that this was because residents often fail to lock their front doors securely, allowing thieves to break in relatively easily at night, pick up the car keys and drive away with the car (sometimes loaded with stolen items). Sgt. Cull said that the problem is linked to the increased installation of PVC front doors, where the door may look secure but without having been locked – you have been warned! The Roads and Road Safety Committee was able to report that Wokingham District Council has agreed to reduce the speed limit to 40mph on the dangerous bends on Jubilee Road between the War Memorial and Warren Lane. Requests for a lowering of the speed limit along Fleet Hill, Wellingtonia Avenue and The Ridges have had limited success, but the Parish Council will continue to lobby Wokingham District Council. The Roads and Road Safety Committee also reported that a contractor is to pay a site visit to Avery’s Corner car park with a view to installing some lighting. Many activities at Nine Mile Ride School end after dark in the winter, and it was felt that limited lighting would help parents and children to feel more secure. Councillor Simon Weeks drew the attention of the Council to a new permitted path which is now open from beside “Talius” (the old Rectory) on Jubilee Hill, to Lower Sandhurst Road. We are very proud of our footpaths in Finchampstead, and this is a welcome addition to the network. Dogs must be kept on leads, though, as livestock grazes near the path. Finally, Councillor Pam Hughes reported from the Campaign Against Waste that 77% of households in Wokingham District re-cycle much of their waste – brilliant!
