Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs)

PCSOs are civilian members of police staff who are employed, managed and tasked by the police.  They wear a police-style uniform and their main functions are to provide a highly visible police presence in public areas and to deal with low-level nuisance and disorder. They do not have powers of detention but do have powers to demand the name and address of anyone acting in an anti-social manner, confiscate alcohol and tobacco from young people, confiscate alcohol from people in designated no-drinking zones, and enforce cordons under the Prevention of Terrorism Act. They may issue fixed penalty notices for litter, dog fouling and cycling on the pavement. They have also been given the powers of traffic wardens.
