All Councillors were present at the September meeting of the Parish Council, with one notable exception; Councillor Bert Vile, who suffered a severe stroke during the summer and who is being cared for in Wokingham Hospital. Councillors expressed their sympathy and good wishes to Bert and his wife. It was some time ago that Councillors and other volunteers took on the massive task of delivering a free street map to every household in the Parish, but it would appear that some people did not receive one. If you were one of the unlucky few, please contact the Parish Office. Councillor Geoff Markham reported on plans to improve the facilities at California Country Park, using funds obtained from the Onyx Trust. Plans are at a very early stage, but may include improvements to the Scout Hut and, possibly, the re-instatement of the tennis courts. The paddling pool at the Park proved extremely popular again this summer; probably too much so for local residents as cars lined the Nine Mile Ride. Although the Parish Council is delighted that the pool is so well used, it is aware of the problems and will be in consultation with WDC to ensure that residents are not inconvenienced. It has been suggested that a small charge be made for use of the pool to help offset the Parish Council’s very generous contribution towards its upkeep. What do you think? As previously reported, the Parish Council has not been happy with youth facilities, especially at The Rides. Over the summer several councillors met with the WDC Youth Service and we now hope that a much improved programme will soon be in place. We have also been assured that only an experienced Youth Worker will be considered for the now vacant position. A Gorse Ride Residents’ Association has also been formed. Its aim is to improve all aspects of community life in and around the Rides area. A multi-agency meeting was held recently at which the Parish Council was represented, and we hope that this new initiative will prove successful. Other matters discussed were:-
Last, but not least – Trafalgar Night celebrations! You will find details elsewhere in the magazine, but get your tickets soon – they will go quickly!
